Get a SIM card and mobile money as a visitor
You'll need
- Your passport (ECOWAS nationals can use an ECOWAS card)
- Proof of entry, once the new registration rules start
-
1
Buy a SIM from a network agent
Buy your SIM from a mobile network's customer service centre or one of its agents. Before it's switched on, give the agent your passport or ECOWAS card.
Don't buy a SIM that's already registered to someone else. Selling pre-registered SIMs is fraud, and the SIM can be blocked. -
2
Register it with the agent
The agent checks your passport, records your name, date of birth and sex, and takes your photo and fingerprints on the SIM registration app. Your SIM works once registration is submitted.
Check your details are right before the agent submits them. -
3
Know the new rules coming
The NCA is preparing a new registration exercise. Visitors and tourists will register with a passport and proof of entry, checked by biometrics in real time. The NCA hasn't announced a start date yet.

Mobile money and payments
Bank of Ghana rules say licensed financial institutions open new accounts only with a Ghana Card or Non-Citizen Ghana Card. With just a passport, visitors staying under 90 days can make one-off remittances, deposits and withdrawals and use Visa or Mastercard at ATMs and card machines.
Whether you can open a mobile money wallet with a passport isn't stated officially. Ask the network when you buy your SIM. -
5
Staying longer
Foreigners who live in Ghana register their SIM with a Non-Citizen Ghana Card from the NIA instead of a passport.
Need help? Visit your network's customer service centre, call its customer care line or contact the NCA.
